Cancer is the name given to a large number of diseases of the cells – which are the basic structural units of all the organs and tissues in our bodies.

What is cancer?

Throughout our lives, the billions of normal cells in our bodies undergo a controlled cycle of growth, division and death. Sometimes, however, this orderly process is derailed when an error develops in a cell's genetic blueprint, resulting in the formation of cancer cells.
